What is an air source heat pump (ASHP)?

An air source heat pump is a low carbon heating system that extracts heat from the outside air – even in winter – and uses it to warm your home and hot water. Air source heat pumps are connected to your radiator circuit in the same way a gas boiler is, but they are several times more efficient and much more environmentally friendly.

Heat pumps run on electricity and, surprisingly, use the same tried and tested technology as a fridge!

FAQs

If you have outdoor space for the unit and indoor space for a hot water tank, an ASHP could be a great fit. Like any heating system, they also work more efficiently in a well-insulated home.

Not necessarily. It depends on your home size, existing radiators, and heating needs.

ASHPs warm the water in your hot water tank in a similar way to a boiler would, but much more efficiently!

Yes! ASHPs can still extract heat even in freezing weather, although they may use more electricity to maintain the desired temperature (much like your boiler may use more gas in winter).

No more than a gas boiler. Most people hardly notice them once they’re installed.

Yes! Many people across the region are happy to share their experience and even invite you to see their heat pump in action. You can find a local homeowner on Visit a Heat Pump.
