Making your historic building more energy efficient

As one of the country’s most ancient and cherished cities, Winchester is home to an abundance of historic buildings that hold centuries of stories and culture. These properties are more than just buildings; they are precious, well-loved homes that deserve to be treated with care and sensitivity when making them fit for future.

It’s therefore fitting that Winchester City Council has published ‘A guide to making your historic building more energy efficient.’

In this 16-page guide, Winchester City Council shares what counts as an historic building and how traditional construction differs from modern construction. By discussing practical renovations from maintenance and repair through to insulation, heating and solar energy, the guide informs:

  1. What types of planning permissions are needed under current regulations;
  2. What information you need to support any application; and
  3. The likelihood of receiving permission.

This guide is intended for residents and business owners within the Winchester district. Please consult your local authority for information relating to historic buildings outside of this area.

Winchester Action on the Climate Crisis (WinACC) is another fantastic source of information for upgrading older buildings in our area. Have a look at their 'Retrofit for older homes – Winchester Action on Climate Crisis' page.
